The Joy of Raising Chickens

IF YOU'VE BEEN CONTEMPLATING RAISING CHICKENS OF YOUR OWN, CONSIDER THIS: -you may spend countless hours each week watching FARM TV in your backyard -you may end up being labeled a "Crazy Chicken Lady" -friends may tag you in every chicken social media post they see -once you fall in love with your hens, this may lead to needing more chicks next year -and since chickens are a gateway farm…

National Handmade Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I created a national holiday, y'all!  Me! I proposed my idea, made its case, paid the processing fee, and waited. It was so exciting to hear back from them, that from now on, the first Saturday in April will always be National Handmade Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Because our time, sewing, pouring, sanding, making, our love, mixing, formulating, quilting, soldering, dreaming, our dedication, and our blood, sweat, and tears all needs to be…

Chicken Fun Show

We collected eggs for a week.  We bathed the hens.  We packed our chicken show supply bag.  And we were off.         The club pulled together another great show! In addition to the usual raffle, chicken competition, egg competition, fun games, and showmanship contest... we also had a concession stand up and running and we got to play a couple rounds of chicken poop bingo.  ;)  …

Boerne Diva Night

I was warned that the spring Diva Night is never as well attended as the fall is.  But, boy am I glad we didn't listen... and participated anyways! First off, Diva Night is quite expensive for little, old, handmade, don't-have-much-merchandise-to-actually-sell me.  I'll be honest, $200 is very difficult for me to scrape up, just to be listed as a participating business and be put on the map. And then the…

My Favorite Instagram Accounts!

The other day, our entire Boerne retailers group was asked to list a few of our favorite LOCAL lifestyle, food, fashion, travel, style, and influential instagram accounts and bloggers. I was surprised that no one listed me 😉….. But I came up with a pretty long list of my favorites! So I thought I’d take some time to actually pull together a blog post, to introduce you to some accounts…

Kendall County Jr. Livestock Show

The broiler project for the Jr. Livestock Show has certainly been an experience!       Over the last five years, we've raised the chickens indoors (in the garage) and outdoors.  In handmade buildings and in our water trough (that has been used as our pool during the rest of the year).  ;) We've had a year when we lost several of them to the cold or bad health.  We…

Boerne Diva Night!

This evening took months of planning for us local retailers.  Some blood, sweat, tears... and a lot of love. And the evening went like so: The check-in stations at Dienger Trading Company and The Flower Shop opened up right at 5:00.  The first 100 ladies at each station got to check in and register to win the two pretty incredible prize baskets that we all donated our products to.  The…

The Kendall County Fair

Another fair in the books!  More fun had, more memories made, more accomplishments, more prize ribbons! The weekend started with me sneaking over to the fairgrounds to check the big chunk of our entries.  It was a great kickstart to the fun! I did well.  My chocolate muffins won third place.  My pineapple cake won second (I still have yet to beat the Italian cream cake that always wins first!).…

Our Magical History Tour!

I'll start with the fact that the trip still had me programmed to get up super early yesterday.  But I quickly went back to bed for a two-hour nap.  And today I slept until 9:00, laid in bed watching TV until 1:00.  Hoping I'm now recovered... But the story begins over a year ago, when Ben brought home information for this WorldStrides trip.  Of course, I was surprised by the…

Chicken Fun Show

Ben was out of town.  But Evan and I were able to attend our 4-H poultry club's Chicken Fun Show. And Evan walked away with a Champion ribbon and trophy!  First Place eggs, y'all!  But let me explain... His plate of three white eggs that were judged on looks didn't place at all.  His plate of three brown eggs that were also judged on looks did poorly. But! Our blue…
